Women In Distress Pet Shelter – a first of its kind in South Florida
Women In Distress vision of opening a pet shelter for domestic violence survivors is finally being realized. One more barrier will be stripped away so that we can help keep families safe in our community.
Up to 50% of those affected by domestic violence delay escaping their abusers because they are concerned about what will happen to their pets. Through a unique partnership with the Humane Society of Broward County, we are now the only Florida Domestic Abuse Coalition certified facility with an approved Pet Shelter.
As the pet-friendly women’s shelter in Broward County, victims of domestic violence seeking safe shelter will be able to bring their pets with them to a unique public shelter when the pet shelter opens soon. An innovative partnership between Women In Distress of Broward County and the Broward County Humane Society insures that all incoming pets will be properly cared for including proper nutrition, physical exams, and vaccines.
On behalf of our survivors and Board of Directors, we extend a heartfelt thank you to our donors and supporters, without whom the opening of the pet shelter would not have been possible.
