My name is Izzy*, I’m 15 years old, and I love Thursday nights. That’s the night my mom and I go to counseling. I attend the teen group, and I like that it’s just kids my age. It’s easier to talk about what I’ve been through when the other kids in the room have been through it too.
One of my first memories is at age 6, when I hid under the piano clutching my stuffed animal while my dad pushed my mom around. I used to try to get in the middle and stop my dad from hurting my mom. When he had a bad day at work, we would run away because it was better to be out there than with him at home.
After my parents divorced, my mom and I started going to Women In Distress. It’s been a few years now, and I see a change in both of us. My mom is definitely happier and less stressed, and I feel like I can do anything I put my mind to. I can really be somebody special.
My friends at school look forward to Fridays, and I always get excited with them. But secretly, I love Thursdays best.
