Spurred by the holiday rush, it’s no surprise December is the most popular month for shopping. Did you know that it is also the most popular month for people to give back to their favorite charities? In fact, studies show that more than 30% of charitable gifts are given in the month of December, with 12% of giving happening in the last three days of the year. While attractive tax benefits compel many people to donate before we bring in the new year, the heart remains the biggest influencer for year-end giving. The warmth of the holidays, a time where we reflect on the importance of friends and family, highlights our desire to help others in need. Research also shows that helping others who are less fortunate makes people happier, so that may be why 69% of the population gives back.
Simply put, Women In Distress would not exist without donations from our community. You don’t need to be a millionaire to give a helping hand to families in need this holiday season. Anyone can give. The combined impact of gifts both big and small has the power to change the lives of the women, children and men finding healing and hope at Women In Distress year-round. Here are a few ways you can help:
- Donate Online
- In Honor/Memorial Gift: This is a great way to remember a loved one and also makes for the perfect gift for the person who has everything. After you have made your contribution in memory or in honor, an acknowledgment letter or email will be sent to the person(s) you designate and a tax receipt will be sent to you. We do not specify the amount of the donation unless you request it.
- Workplace Giving: There are many ways to get your company involved in giving back, like making a monetary donation, or sponsoring an event. Many companies match employee donations so be sure to check with your HR department to see if your company has a Matching Gift program.
- Planned Giving: Leave a legacy with a meaningful gift through your will, real estate, a Charitable Gift Annuity or Charitable Remainder Trust.
- Hal Herman Children’s Fund (HHCF)/Celebration Wall: Your gift will help the smallest survivors of domestic violence. Gifts of $500 or more will be recognized with an engraved plate in honor of a family member, friend or loved one on the HHCF Celebration Wall at the Women In Distress Family Center.
