Types of Volunteer Opportunities

At Women In Distress, we have many different types of ways to volunteer and provide much needed support and services to our center and community. Below are the different types of volunteer opportunities available with their description and requirements. Volunteers are an important part of the Women In Distress team. They play an important role in helping to keep families safe as they rebuild their violence-free lives. Women In Distress utilizes over 300 volunteers each year. Once an application is submitted, you will be contacted within 1-2 weeks by a staff member with next steps.

Consistent Volunteer Opportunities

Direct Service Volunteers

Our Direct Service Volunteers are volunteers that have obtained clearance through our Core Competency training to work directly with our participants in our center. Volunteer areas include answering calls on our 24-hour crisis line; assisting our advocates with updating participant files; playing with and supervising children in our Respite program while mom or dad meets with an advocate; and more. Please note: these volunteer opportunities require a commitment of 2-4 hours/week for 6 months, more than 24 hours of training, and a background check.

 

Requirements:

 

  • Submit a volunteer application
  • Complete a background check and drug test
  • Complete 24 hours of Core Competency training
  • Attend Orientation and our DV: 101 training

 

 

Indirect Service Volunteers

Our Indirect Service Volunteers are volunteers that work in our center supporting our staff, services, and our center. Volunteer areas include fundraising & events; representing Women In Distress at community events providing agency information and answering questions; providing administrative assistance in our Administration, Finance, or Human Resources departments.

 

Requirements:

 

  • Submit a Volunteer Application
  • Complete a background check and drug test
  • Attend Orientation and our DV: 101 training

 

 

One-time Volunteer Opportunities

Provide a Professional Service
Would you like to provide a service such as salon, spa, or makeover services, financial literacy;, tutoring, Dress for Success, and/or interviewing skills, etc. Click here for the professional services application.

Group Volunteers
Interested in volunteering with a group? There are several ways you can contribute and help our families, including hosting activities for families and children, cleaning & facility maintenance, Thrift Store operations, and more. Click here for the group volunteer application.

Intern
Women In Distress supports students intern opportunities as a center that can provide theory in action learning opportunities. If you are interested in doing our internship with WID contact our Volunteer Coordinator via volunteerdepartment@womenindistress.org with your skills, goals, and interests to outline opportunities available for you.

Community Service
Thank you for selecting Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc. to be the recipient of your community service hours. If hours are needed immediately, if they are court-ordered, or required for WorkForce One, please contact our Thrift Store at 954-975-7425, as we typically fulfill immediate service hour needs at that location.
