Volunteer

Volunteers are an important part of the Women In Distress team. They play an important role in helping to keep families safe as they rebuild their violence-free lives. Women In Distress utilizes over 300 volunteers each year. Some volunteers donate time on a regular basis, while others participate in special projects and periodic events.  We also have a very dedicated Board of Directors that donates countless hours to agency oversight and planning.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer opportunities change frequently as priorities and projects arise. We encourage you to subscribe to our monthly volunteer email newsletter so that you can begin receiving regular updates about volunteer needs, trainings and announcements.

If you are interested in working as a counselor or teacher at Women In Distress, we do not currently have needs for volunteers in these areas. Instead, we regularly utilize volunteers in the following capacities (most of these needs are at the Jim & Jan Moran Family Center in Deerfield Beach):

  • Answering the 24-Hour Crisis Hotline
  • Completing administrative tasks and projects in departments like Development and Accounting
  • Assisting at our Thrift Store in Margate
  • Representing Women In Distress at community events providing agency information and answering questions
  • Supervising children in our Respite program while parents meets with staff
  • Helping with periodic events, holiday projects, and other agency needs

Staff and volunteers who have consistent, direct contact with program participants, are required to complete 24 hours of in-depth training in order to qualify under Florida Statute 90.5036 and be registered for domestic violence advocate-victim privilege.  Other training requirements may apply.  Background checks are also required for consistent volunteers.
