Become an Agency Volunteer

Last year alone, Women In Distress volunteers saved the agency more than $470,000 through donated time. Our volunteers help us provide services and fulfill our mission.  Volunteers assist with respite, crisis line, front desk, Speakers' Bureau, fundraising, events, and more!

The first step to becoming a volunteer is to attend a mandatory 60-90 minute Volunteer Orientation, held every 3-4 weeks at different times of day and different days of the week, so that everyone can attend.  At orientation, you will recieve an application and learn next steps to becoming a volunteer.

Next Scheduled Orientations: Orientations are limited to 20 attendees.  RSVP is required to Courtney Holshouser at cholshouser@womenindistress.org

Tours occur the 2nd Thursday and 4th Tuesday of each month. RSVP is required at 954-332-3459 or kskidmore@womenindistress.org.

A World of Thanks
2009 Volunteer Appreciation Event

The Women In Distress 2009 Volunteer Appreciation Event was a huge success! Held on May 2, 2009 at Broward General Medical Center, who was the Presenting Sponsor, this year’s event was a breakfast, complete with an omelet station, baked goodies, fresh fruit, and gourmet coffee. Josette Van Putten, Women In Distress Board Chair, James Thawe, CEO of Broward General Medical Center, and Mary Riedel, President and CEO of Women In Distress, welcomed more than 60 volunteers and staff who attended the event. The event theme was “A World of Thanks” and volunteers were thanked for their service in areas such as outreach, crisis line, respite/child care, speakers’ bureau, development, and others. Last year, over 800 volunteers donated hours totaling over $250,000 to Women In Distress.

Throughout the evening, presenters from each department called their nominees up to the stage and presented them with their names on the volunteer recognition plaques that will be displayed in the second floor lobby of the Jim and Jan Moran Family Center. All of the volunteers attending the event received a thank you note written by a WID staff member in appreciation of their hard work.

The 2008 winners are as follows:
Shelter: Ellen Baker
Outreach Direct Staff: Fran Asaro
Outreach Administrative: Diane Levine
Respite: Joy Bailey
Student Intern: Colleen Webb
Pro Bono: Dr. Carlos Levy
Social Change: Jennifer Rosinski
WIDA: Elizabeth LeBrecht
PEARR: Marika Guyton
Development: Ruben Rozental
Overall Volunteer of the Year: Joyce Cerroni
