Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc. offers free programs and services for the entire family at the Jim and Jan Moran Family Center in Downtown Fort Lauderdale. These programs are divided into Residential Services, Outreach Services and Social Change. Inclusive of these programs and services are: emergency shelter, survivor individual and group counseling for men, women, and children; counseling for victims of same-sex relationships; parenting classes; and anger managment. Together, a program participant and their advocate or counselor will evaluate the participant's needs. Accommodations are made to meet all language needs, as well as special services for those with disabilities. Currently, groups and individual sessions are available in English, Spanish and Creole.
Women In Distress also partners with a number of community organizations to provide additional services to clients escaping from an abusive environment. The classes and services include: parenting skills, self esteem groups, job training and placement, and life skills training.
- Parenting Groups are available in English and Spanish. These parenting classes are designed to give skills to new or long time parents who have experienced domestic violence.
- Family Support Services -Watching a friend or family member live with abuse in their life is a very painful experience - one that can leave you feeling out of control and with no where to turn. That's where the "support" comes in. These services will provide support to the family and discuss issues related to better understanding and assisting loved ones who are experiencing domestic abuse. The goal is to help increase safety in the survivor's lives as friends and family become more aware of the dynamics of abuse.
- E.A.G.L.E. (Ending Abuse for Gays and Lesbians Everywhere- even at home) is a program in partnership with the Pride Center. A weekly educational support group is offered on Tuesday 7pm-8:30pm. Please contact Women In Distress of Broward County for more information at 954-760-9800.
