Women In Distress is the only nationally accredited, state-certified, full service domestic violence center serving Broward County, Florida. Our services include a 24-hour crisis line, emergency shelter, advocacy, therapy, children’s services and education and prevention. These confidential services are offered free of charge to victims of domestic violence no matter their age, gender, race, sexual orientation, immigration status, or socio-economic standing.Accommodations are made to meet all language needs, as well as the needs of those with disabilities. Currently, groups and individual sessions are available in English, Spanish, Creole, and Portuguese, and sign language interpreters are available to those who require them. Emergency Shelter: The emergency shelter is at the heart of Women In Distress’ mission and provides families fleeing abusive situations with safe shelter and critical needs such as of food, clothing, household supplies, personal needs, advocacy, support groups and therapy. Click here to read more.
24-Hour Crisis Hotline: The 24-Hour Crisis Hotline (954-761-1133) is operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide emergency intervention and information on available services. Advocacy & Support Groups: Through individual sessions, advocates assist domestic violence victims with creating and maintaining an individualized safety plan, and providing case management that focuses on identifying services and resources the participant may need. Advocates also facilitate support groups that allow participants to explore their experiences in an open and safe environment. Click here to read more.
Therapy: The Therapy program provides clinical assistance to individuals who are suffering from symptoms of domestic violence abuse that are impacting their ability to function on a day to day basis. The goal of therapy sessions is to reduce the effects of trauma due to victimization and enable survivors to re-engage in daily activities. Click here for more information.
Children’s Services: With parental consent, age-appropriate services are offered to children ages 0-17. Services include a safety plan fitted to the individual child’s needs, emergency shelter, respite care while parents receive services, individual counseling and support groups broken up into age and gender categories. Education & Prevention: Women In Distress’ focus is not only the immediate safety of the families we serve, but also on reducing and eliminating violence in our community and society. By providing participants and their families, as well as the community, with education on the issue of domestic violence, people are given the tools to participate in healthy relationships.
